THE ICONIC SPRUNG FLOOR

THE ICONIC SPRUNG FLOOR

IT DOES INDEED MOVE

With it's original purpose as a ballroom, the Barrowland has an iconic sprung dancefloor, which is made from Canadian maple specially imported for the job. The “spring” comes from the construction of timbers under the floor. Instead of traditional wooden joists the floor rests on batons which lay criss-crossed on top of each other. You can bounce in safety because in 1988 the floor was reinforced by a series of 18 x steel pillars and cross-members to spread the load of 1900 hundred passionate fans bouncing in unison by a company who designed oil rigs.
