As well as attracting traders and customers the Barras also proved to be a lure for street entertainers looking to hoover up some money from the assembled crowd. One of the better known in recent years Robbie the Robot who was described as a cyborg mime artist. Armed with his ghetto blaster and box for donations he would entertain the crowds with robotic moves and visual jokes, he also plied his trade at Buchanan Street and outside Marks and Spencer on Argyle Street. Robbie also appeared on an episode of BBC comedy 'Rab C Nesbitt' where he received a 'Glesga Kiss' (head butt) from the eponymous string-vested anti-hero. Robbie the Robot later revealed himself as Robert Harris and now lives in England.
